How to recognise phimosis?<\/strong><\/h2>

Phimosis is a condition characterised by difficulty or inability to retract the foreskin over the glans penis. There are two main types of phimosis: total phimosis and partial phimosis. In the case of total phimosis, retracting the foreskin over the glans penis is impossible, whereas in the case of partial phimosis, the foreskin can be retracted, but only to a small extent. In most cases, phimosis occurs in infants and young children, but it can also affect adult men. Both total phimosis and partial phimosis are serious defects and should be treated by a urologist.<\/p>

Recognising phimosis is not difficult, as the symptoms are quite characteristic. Symptoms of phimosis primarily include difficulty in retracting the glans of the penis, pain and discomfort during urination, and difficulties with intimate hygiene. With a narrowed foreskin opening, even an erection can be painful, which is why phimosis treatment procedures are common and quickly help to get rid of pain or complications such as recurring inflammation. In the case of recurring inflammation of the glans of the penis, it is worth consulting a doctor to determine the cause of the problem.<\/p>

Circumcision surgery \u2013 how does it proceed? <\/strong><\/h2>

The treatment of phimosis depends on its severity and the cause of the condition. A urologist will approach partial phimosis differently than they would treat complete phimosis. In the case of partial phimosis, the primary treatments are retracting the foreskin and using anti-inflammatory medications to reduce inflammation of the glans penis. In cases of recurrent inflammation of the glans, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove the cause of the problem.<\/p>

A urologist decides whether a patient is suitable for a phimosis operation. The phimosis operation involves performing what is known as circumcision, which is the removal of part or all of the foreskin. This procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthesia in an outpatient setting.<\/p>

Procedures for foreskin removal also include phimosis plasty or frenulum plasty. Phimosis plasty involves the surgical treatment of phimosis by widening the foreskin so that a man can freely retract it from the glans of the penis. Following phimosis and frenulum plasty, the recovery period is approximately 3-4 weeks.<\/p>

Untreated phimosis \u2013 what are the risks? <\/strong><\/h2>

Untreated phimosis can lead to serious complications. In cases of recurrent inflammation of the glans penis, urinary tract infections may occur, as well as inflammation of the prostate gland, which is a common complication of phimosis. Untreated urinary tract inflammations are very serious, and in the case of bacterial infections, they can be transmitted to the partner of an untreated man. Untreated phimosis can also lead to the formation of foreskin cysts and difficulties with urination. In extreme cases, failure to treat phimosis can lead to serious health complications, including the development of cancer.<\/p>
