Andrology at Vedi Clinic

Andrology (from the Greek andros – man and logos – word) is a field of medical science that deals with disorders and physiology of the male reproductive system. While gynecology deals with the female reproductive system, andrology is its male equivalent. An andrologist, who is often a urologist, therefore undertakes diagnostic activities and deals with the treatment of not only developmental defects of the male reproductive system, but also sexual disorders, infertility, puberty disorders and deficiency of male sex hormones, i.e. androgens.

What does andrology deal with?

On a daily basis, an andrologist is primarily concerned with providing patients with advice on erection problems, infertility, low libido or hormonal disorders. In addition, this doctor is concerned with securing fertility in those patients who are about to undergo oncological treatment in the form of chemotherapy. Often, drugs used to fight cancer turn out to be lethal to sperm, which is why it is necessary to properly secure the patient's fertility.

Q&A

Patients should regularly use andrological consultations, because they allow for early detection of possible diseases or changes in the urinary-genital system. Especially since these can make it difficult for the patient to function daily, have a significant impact on their fertility, and sometimes even on their life - as in the case of cancers in the genital system. However, while female patients regularly use the services of gynecological clinics, men are very often not aware of the existence of andrology at all, and therefore the percentage of patients who regularly consult a specialist in this field is small.

One of the reasons why it is worth deciding on an andrological consultation is an abnormal result of a semen analysis, in the case when the patient is unsuccessfully trying for a child. It is the andrologist who will be able to conduct a detailed diagnosis of the patient's infertility and then - based on the tests - make a decision on the appropriate treatment, which can improve the semen parameters and thus restore the man's fertility.

It is worth the patient to make an appointment for an andrological consultation also when they are struggling with painful, unpleasant ailments in the genital area – then it will be possible to implement the appropriate form of treatment at an early stage. However, it is recommended that men regularly use andrological consultations – also in a situation when they seem to have no problems and feel great. It may turn out that in reality, their body is developing an asymptomatic, early stage of the disease, the existence of which they are not aware. Such a consultation allows them to be detected at a very early stage.

During a visit to an andrologist, the doctor will first conduct a detailed interview with the patient. Among other things, he will ask about the patient's lifestyle, the course of sexual development, as well as any illnesses and ailments experienced so far. Possible genetic predispositions are also important, so it is worth preparing for questions related to the occurrence of diseases in the family. After conducting the interview, the doctor also checks the patient's general condition and may also conduct physical examinations of the epididymis, penis, abdomen and chest. During the consultation, the doctor will additionally assess the appearance of the genitals and body hair and its structure. If necessary, the andrologist may also conduct a rectal examination to assess and examine any changes in the prostate gland, seminal ducts or urinary bladder. Each visit to an andrologist ends with the doctor making a diagnosis or - if this is not possible - recommending extended diagnostic tests to obtain a broader picture of the patient's health.

First of all, the patient should not delay making an appointment with an andrologist if he notices problems related to the improper functioning of the male reproductive system. Examples of symptoms indicating the need for an andrological consultation (inter alia):

  • erectile dysfunction,
  • delayed or premature ejaculation,
  • decreased libido,
  • the occurrence of skin lesions on the patient's genitals,
  • unsuccessful attempts to have offspring,
  • abnormal urination or problems with urination,
  • the occurrence of signs of andropause, e.g. increased sweating, sleep disturbances, excessive nervousness or decreased muscle strength,
  • swelling and pain in the genital area.
