Transrectal ultrasound diagnostics

Transrectal ultrasound has many applications. It is primarily used to diagnose pathological conditions of the prostate, such as prostatitis or prostate cancer. In addition, it can be used to monitor the progress of treatment and to plan for possible surgical interventions. The examination can also be performed purely prophylactically and includes an assessment of blood flow in the blood vessels of the prostate.

Q&A

During this examination, the patient lies on his or her side with the legs bent at the knees. The doctor or medical technician gently inserts a thin ultrasound probe into the patient's anus. To carry out the examination without pain, the probe is coated with a special gel. By using the probe, it is possible to obtain an image of the anatomical structures of the prostate, bladder and surrounding tissues on a monitor.

Those who should undergo transrectal ultrasound are mainly men when prostate conditions are suspected or monitored, especially for symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urges to urinate, and pain or discomfort in the prostate area.

Preparation for the examination may include abstaining from food and drink a few hours before the procedure, and cleansing the bowels by using an enema or taking laxative medication to allow better visualisation of prostate structures during the examination. The appropriate method of preparation is a good idea to consult with the referring physician who ordered the examination.

Recovery time after the examination is usually short. There may be a brief feeling of discomfort in the anal area, but these symptoms usually resolve within a few hours after the examination.
